Tassier

A tribute to our beloved Gonzalo

The original idea came from Gonzalo’s friends’ desire to create a book: a posthumous autobiography written in Gonzalo’s own handwriting. To make this happen, they asked us to help create the Tassier typeface, based on Gonzalo’s handwriting.

A typeface based on Gonzalo Tassier’s handwriting

With support from his daughter, Berenice Tassier, we explored Gonzalo’s texts, analyzed them, and selected two or three character versions, including ligatures. We then retouched, cleaned, and redrew each glyph in vector format, refined them, and programmed the typeface for smooth, flowing alternation to enhance the reading experience.

Tassier preserves the artist’s restless mind

Unreadable and endearing

Gonzalo had a unique way of looking at life: restless, ingenious, creative, expressive, disorganized, generous, and passionate. Gonzalo constantly poured his thoughts into his journal, which eventually became his book Trazos de una vida. The challenge was to keep his spirit alive among his loved ones through the Tassier typeface.

In the Tassier typeface, everything was designed to emulate Gonzalo

Thanks to Elí Castellanos’s help, we’ve added the ability for the typeface to alternate between characters and ligatures, creating overlapping lines that produce a lively, chaotic effect reminiscent of Gonzalo’s writing.

The Tassier typeface seeks to recognize the mark Gonzalo left on Mexican design and bring his work to new generations. As a way of helping keep his work present and in use within the design community, the typeface is available at a symbolic price, making it accessible to students, professionals, and anyone who admires his work.
